Our overall mental health is as important as our physical health. Being mentally healthy allows us to reach our full potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, and contribute to our community. Stress and anxiety are part of everyday life. As a student, you are also under the daily pressure of studying, assignments and tests.
The start of a new year is a great time to make a fresh start, and today we're bringing you four ways to improve your mental health.
-> Self-Care
Your daily routine can sometimes make you lose passion for the activities that you love. Taking care of yourself is taking the time to do what you are passionate about. A few minutes of reading, gardening, painting or yoga every day can have a huge impact on your well-being, both physical and mental.
And for better results, try unplugging from technology for a few hours or an entire day. This should allow you to take better care of yourself.
-> Meditation
No need to isolate yourself on a misty mountain to enjoy the benefits of meditation. It just takes a quiet place and a little time.
Meditation is an extraordinary tool to strengthen our attention over time and to reveal what is best in us.
There are many forms of meditation. It's about finding the one that's right for you.
-> Nutrition
What you eat has a major impact on how you feel. Make sure you put the right things on your plate.
Canada's Food Guide recommends that people eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and plant protein. It also advises that you cook your own meals and eat with others as much as possible.
-> Exercise
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that people between the ages of 18 and 64 have a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity sports activity every week, to maintain good health. These 150 minutes can be replaced by 75 minutes of intense physical activity or sport.
That said, any physical activity has its benefits, even if it's a short walk during the day.
Your Mental Health Matters
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as "a state of well-being that enables everyone to recognize their own capacities, to achieve fulfillment, to overcome the normal tensions of life, to perform productive work. and fruitful and to contribute to the life of its community ”. According to this definition, being in good mental health is therefore not just about not having an illness.
