Get your blood pressure checked on November 1, 2013
Ajax, ON – October 25, 2013 – Heart health is a major concern for everyone. High blood pressure is the number one risk factor for stroke and a main cause of heart disease. Maintaining blood pressure within a health range can help reduce potential health risks. To help you get your blood pressure in check, the Personal Support Worker class and instructors from CDI College in Ajax will hold a public blood pressure clinic on November 1, 2013 at Pickering Town Centre.
According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, high blood pressure affects one in five Canadians. Also known as hypertension, the condition is considered to be a silent killer because symptoms do not appear until it is very advanced, in some cases, after a person has a heart attack or stroke. Despite the lack of symptoms, high blood pressure can be controlled. And, it starts with getting your blood pressure checked.
Personal support workers work with people in long-term care facilities, hospitals, hospices and more. As such, the job may also require them to take clients’ blood pressure and record and report the results. Students in the Personal Support Worker program learn to provide optimal support and care planning to patients, assisting them with mobility, medication and personal hygiene. They also learn to measure vital signs, including pulse, respiration and blood pressure.
While the blood pressure clinic is an excellent way for students to put their skills to use, it is also part of CDI College’s larger commitment to the communities it serves. In the past, Ontario campuses hosted community lectures, professional development workshops and food drives.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends getting your blood pressure checked once every two years. Take a few minutes and head to Pickering Town Centre on Friday, November 1st from 9:00am-1:00pm. Along with finding out your blood pressure, this is an excellent chance to find out about the Personal Support Worker program, talk to some of the students and see them in action.
