New Funding Lowers Cost of Personal Support Worker Training

May 4, 2021 | Ontario

New government funding aims to expand the ranks of skilled healthcare staff in Ontario’s long-term care facilities. As the pandemic fuels demand for personal support workers, the Government of Ontario is providing tens of millions of dollars to lower training costs.

Through the initiative, students who study at institutions such as CDI College might be eligible to receive up to $13,000. The funds are to cover fees, books, and other expenses.

The government action comes as the COVID-19 crisis continues to highlight the vital role personal support workers play in the healthcare system. Personal support workers ensure the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of people who live in home care or long-term care facilities.

Many of Ontario’s professionals have trained in the Personal Support Worker diploma program at CDI College. Led by industry-experienced instructors, the program covers key topics, including nutrition, medications, mental health, and personal hygiene. Students also complete two real-world clinical placements.

The Government of Ontario is providing all aspects of financial assistance for the so-called PSW Challenge Fund. To be eligible for this new financial support, students must start their training between May 1 and July 31, 2021.
