During the month of December, students, instructors and faculty at CDI College supported Food Banks Canada in an effort to ensure their local communities had ample food and necessities for the holiday season. For each item collected, CDI College donated 25 cents to Food Banks Canada. From December 1 to 24, over 1000 non-perishable food items and $250 was raised for impoverished Canadians.
In Mississauga, the CDI College campus was joined by MPP Natalia Kusendova, where she donated her time and an additional $300 to the cause.
“It was an honour to work with MPP Natalia Kusendova on this initiative,” says Hanan El-Zoueiter Campus Director, Mississauga. “CDI College aims to lead by example – by ensuring families have food on the table during the holiday season, we’re able to give back to underprivileged members of the community and build personal relationships with these community members and other community leaders.”
Recent numbers from Food Banks Canada show many people face difficulty putting food on the table. Canadian food banks get up to one million visits per month, and a third of these visits are children.
Food Banks Canada is continually looking for support. Some items that are urgently needed include:
- Pasta (canned or dry) and pasta sauces
- Canned and frozen meats and fish
- Meat alternatives (peanut butter, soy, assorted nuts)
- Canned goods (beans, soups, and stews)
- Dairy (fresh, canned, and powdered milk)
- Canned vegetables and fruit
- Whole grain cereals
- Infant foods and baby formula
- Bathroom tissue and diapers
- Personal hygiene products
