How a Workout Plan Increases Mental Focus

While you’re studying at home, there may be times where it’s difficult to stay on track without the help of a regular routine. Home workouts are a great solution. Not only do home workouts provide a steady routine, but they also help with focus, concentration, and aid the brain’s ability to retain new information.

 

Studies have shown that even 20 minutes of physical activity has positive effects on increasing blood flow and concentration. When blood is flowing to the brain, it activates cell growth in the hippocampus, which is the portion of the brain primarily responsible for learning and memory functions.

 

Right before you pull out your study notes, try going for a jog around the block or completing a 30-minute HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout from your living room.

 

Research has also proven that your brain remembers more when your body is active. A study completed by the American College of Sports Medicine confirmed that memory is enhanced with physical exercise. A group of students were asked to memorize a string of letters, and then choose between running or sitting quietly. The students who chose “running” were quicker and more accurate with their recollection of the letters.

 

Lastly, exercise also enhances productivity and self-discipline. Yoga is a perfect activity for promoting self-discipline, since it requires you to hold difficult positions, balance, and meditate.

 

The next time you’re preparing for an exam, try completing a workout before you start studying, and see how much extra information you’re able to retain. It might surprise you!
