The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and study techniques to help foster effective learning and a positive educational experience. This course explores two components of learning styles, Multiple Intelligence-based theory and Personality Spectrum – MBTI-based theory, and how learning styles and personality types affect learning. The course will cover the importance of values, their relationship to goals and goal setting. Strategies for setting personal goals, prioritizing tasks, managing time, and the stress that results from study or work situations will be explored and practiced through active participation in learner-centred activities. Effective study habits, techniques for preparing for tests and productive note taking strategies are key topics of this course that will provide the students with the necessary skills and attitudes to be successful in school. Having a sound understanding of financial, money, credit and debt matters and their implication on our lives is critical knowledge to have. Students taking this course will benefit from completing the Financial Management Workshops, which provides comprehensive coverage of financial and money management skills that will allow them to better save, budget, and manage their money and financial situations.

Microsoft Word

This course introduces the students to word processing with Microsoft Word 2016. Relying very heavily on a hands-on practical training approach, students learn by doing through skills based simulations, training and assessments. The course starts with an overview of Microsoft Office 2016 where you will learn about the common features of the Office applications and file management fundamentals. The course then focuses on the core features of Microsoft Word where students learn proper document formatting, organization and editing using the tools and features of the ribbon. The course will then continue with more advanced topics such as working with tables, lists, objects, templates footnotes and endnotes and mail merges. Finally the course will explore the collaboration features of Word 2016 that allow users to share and collaborate on documents through the use of track changes, sharing and reviewing and the use of OneDrive.

Effective Business Writing

Business Essentials

This module explores a variety of topics in business organization, operations and management. The history of business in Canada and major forms of business ownership are discussed. Students learn about planning and organizing the structure a business enterprise, managing and maintaining its operations. The concepts of quality and productivity are introduced. The use of the latest information systems and communication technology in conducting business is also covered.

Accounting Fundamentals 1

This course is an introduction to the fundamental principles and practices of accounting as a device for reporting business activity. It provides the student with an understanding of the underlying theory and principles of accounting. The construction of financial statements as they evolve from business transactions and records is emphasized using the rules of double-entry bookkeeping. In addition, adjusting journal entries and everyday transactions for both service and retail businesses are recorded coupled with the preparation of basic financial statements.

Introduction to Management Information Systems

Managing, protecting, accessing and analyzing information in a timely manner is the cornerstone of a company’s decision making processes leading to intelligent business decisions. This course provides an overview of the various information systems that are essential parts of business processes in today’s global business landscape. The course starts with an exploration of general information systems and resources such as computer systems, Database systems, data warehousing and the personal, legal and ethical issues that surround information systems. Students will learn about the various systems that support data communication, e-commerce, cloud computing and global information systems in a connected world. Finally, the course will explore enterprise level management information systems that support an organization’s various activities. 

Strategic Web Design

In this course, students will be able to create a search engine-friendly website. Students will be introduced to the website planning process, and discover the web design tools, principles and strategies that will allow them to design create and publish a fully functional web site. Students will become familiar with web hosting principles and integrate social media effectively on their websites. Topics include publishing fundamentals, graphic design principles and the creative aspect of web design, website security and analytics, Integration of e-commerce components such as shopping carts, Customer Relationship Management and loyalty programs. Finally, students will learn to integrate multimedia, online advertising and streaming channels to their websites.

Digital Marketing Fundamentals

In this course students will learn the key concepts of digital marketing. The course will explore the importance of branding, audience reach and demographics in the marketing strategies. Students will learn how to utilize analytics and the importance of goals as part of the marketing processes. The course will explore the importance of domain names, keywords and how to leverage Search Engine Optimization strategies. Pay Per Click, Online marketing, email marketing and budgeting are also discussed within the context of this course.

Social Media Marketing Strategies

Customer Relations and Interpersonal Skills

The importance of the customer and of customer relations to business success is examined through case studies and role-playing. Students will learn relevant theories of human behaviour and how they may be applied to improve customer relations.

Project Management

This course will develop the core set of technical and managerial skills needed to successfully perform all the steps needed in managing a project. The objective of this course is to explore both the technical and social components of project management. The course introduces students to the fundamentals of project management as well as provides an opportunity to apply these fundamentals in the analysis of case examples and in-depth exploration of project management issues. As such, the course provides an equal blend of lecture-based and experiential learning opportunities. 

Marketing

Career & Employment Strategies

In addition to learning career-oriented skills, students learn how to get a job in their chosen profession. Our Employment Services department will assist the graduate in resume writing, as well as preparing for job interviews. Our staff is sensitive to current job market trends and the needs of employers in each local market.
Our graduates receive guidance and training to use career tools that help job seekers build a better resume and cover letter, manage an online portfolio, hone interviewing skills, and develop a personal brand online.
Students will have the use of a computer lab which has unlimited Internet access, as well as job search resources. Facilitators will also be made available to advise on job finding resources, interview skills and techniques and to carry out mock interviews.

Business and Digital Marketing Management Practicum

Students will be placed in actual work places related to their field of study and will be expected to act as a regular employee in order to gain the valuable real world experience that so many employers seek. Students are encouraged to find their own work experience placement; however, once placed, continuation in that placement is mandatory.

Business and Digital Marketing Management Co-op

A co-operative (co-op) placement is designed to provide students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the academic component of the program into relevant work experience. During the co-op, students will be considered employees who are actively engaged in productive work for the duration of the co-op session. The co-op experience will provide students with coaching and mentoring, work-site monitoring and employer evaluations. This workplace exposure will benefit the students by providing a deeper real-time insight to the current trends in the industry, allowing them to explore their different career opportunities, and observe professionals in practical work situations. Students will continue to strengthen their experience by acquiring situation-specific skills and identifying areas that may need to be developed further. The institution will monitor both the student and the employer throughout the co-op session to ensure that the experience is beneficial to all stakeholders. At the conclusion of the co-op, a written evaluation of the student’s performance will be completed.
