New Practical Nursing Program Now Available in Surrey

October 4, 2012 | British Columbia

Theory combined with practical training prepares students for healthcare careers in 75 weeks

Surrey, BC – October 4, 2012 – CDI College recently introduced the new Practical Nursing program at its campus in Surrey. The program will provide students with the learning opportunities to acquire and integrate the skills and knowledge they need to find employment in BC’s healthcare sector.

According to WorkBC, a growing and aging population will require more healthcare services, increasing the demand for LPNs in the province, with the majority of openings arising from the creation of new jobs. While demand tends to be higher in areas with more long-term care facilities and acute care centres, new openings are predicted in specialty areas including emergency wards, operating rooms and pediatrics.

“LPNs work in a range of settings, from hospitals and long-term care to doctor’s offices and public schools,” says Larry Heinzlmeir, VP of Marketing for CDI College. “In order to provide care to a variety of people, they need the right combination of skills and education. The Practical Nursing program at CDI College provides that training.”

Designed to train highly capable, knowledgeable and accountable graduates, the 75-week Practical Nursing program prepares students to meet the competencies and standards established by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia (CLPNBC). Along with the history and evolution of LPNs within the Canadian healthcare system, students learn about professional communication, pharmacology, health promotion and disease prevention. They also explore management of disease and illness across the lifespan, with an emphasis on intervention and treatment.

The program presents multiple opportunities to hone and incorporate their skills and knowledge in the classroom, simulation, laboratory and clinical practical experiences. Prior to graduation, students also take part in a preceptorship, a final practical experience that allows them to demonstrate integration and consolidation of the knowledge, skills and abilities in the workplace.

Graduates of the program will be able to effectively deliver patient-centred, culturally sensitive care to a range of patients and their families. Career opportunities can be found in hospitals, medical clinics, schools, home care, Alzheimer’s units and more.
