Legal courses help prepare legal administrative assistants for a career in family law

Surrey, BC - June 29, 2010 - There are a number of fields of law that a legal assistant may find themselves working in, depending upon the company or the law office they choose to work in. One of the main fields is family law.

The types of matters and cases that a legal assistant may become familiar with in a family law office, and through legal courses, include the following:

Divorce and Dissolution: The court procedure for terminating a marriage.

Adoption: New adoptions or step parent adoptions are common matters in family law practices. Legal assistants will assist in document preparation and court filing.

Child Custody and Support: Preparation of documents and court cases to regulate custody of a child or support in the care of a child.

Marriage and Prenuptial Agreements: Assistance in prenuptial or antenuptial agreements are premarital agreements which cover anything from assets to marital debt in the event of a divorce.

Guardianship and Conservatorships: Matters which grant a person legal authority to care for a person and/or their property. This can be for children or adults that are not able to manage matters themselves.

Probate: The distribution of an estate when a person passes away.

Estate Planning: Counseling and preparation of wills and trust agreements and legal documents pertaining preparing the estate for when one passes. This could also include preparation of health care directives.

The specific matters that a law office will handle will vary and each case will be different. A legal assistant that is employed in the field of family law will work and become familiar with most of these types of procedures.
