7 unusual-but-smart places to squeeze in study time

June 13, 2019 | Alberta

As a student, few things are as precious as a good place to study, but finding one isn’t always easy.

Stay at home, and noisy roommates or family members might disrupt you. Head out the door, and you might face a long journey to a crowded library or coffee shop.

There's good news, though. If you're okay switching up the usual scenery, there are many prime study spots to be found.

These aren’t the kind of places you’ll want to spend hours studying in, but that’s not a problem. Research shows that you can learn well in short sessions spread out over time instead of in big chunks.

So bring your textbook, notes, or flashcards next time you’re here:

1. At the gym

Toiling on the stationary bike or elliptical can be miserable. Read next week’s chapter to take your mind off of the discomfort. You’ll get smart and fit at the same time. How efficient!

2. On transit

Riding the bus or rapid transit can feel like being held in captivity. However, it does make it easy to prep for your next exam because, well, what else is there to do? As a bonus, it’ll make the trip go faster.

3. In a lineup

To survive a long, boring wait you need to keep your mind occupied. Here’s a fun challenge: quiz yourself and see how many answers you can get right before you reach the front of the line.

4. At the dentist

Dread dental work? If you’re in the waiting room, leave the old magazines alone and pull out your lecture notes instead. It might distract you from any anxiety.

5. In your car

Find a quiet spot to park and you’re all set to learn. There’s lots of room to store study materials and you can put on some music, if you like.

6. At the dog park

The fresh air will keep your mind clear and ready to absorb knowledge. Meanwhile, your pup will benefit from solo time with new four-legged friends.

7. At soccer practice

Who’s your daughter’s No. 1 fan? You are, of course! Show your support by being at her practice instead of alone at the library.
