Government data shows a $31.00 per hour median wage of the payroll administrator in British Columbia, while WorkBC forecasts 2,600 job openings between 2025 and 2035. Actual earnings vary by experience, location, employer, and responsibilities.

Here is what the latest BC wage and labour-market data shows.

How Much Does a Payroll Administrator Make in BC?

According to the Government of Canada's Job Bank, the current payroll administrator salary in BC falls within the following hourly wage range:

WorkBC reports annual earnings of $58,221 for payroll administrators in BC. This should not be interpreted simply as $31 multiplied by a standard 40-hour workweek. In February 2026, WorkBC changed its methodology to calculate annual earnings using the usual weekly hours actually worked in each occupation rather than automatically assuming 40 hours per week. What Can Affect a Payroll Administrator's Salary?

The published low, median and high wages show that earnings within the occupation can vary substantially. However, government wage data does not establish that completing a particular course or credential automatically results in a specific salary.

  • Previous payroll and accounting experience
  • Complexity and size of the payroll being administered
  • Software and systems responsibilities
  • Employer and industry
  • Geographic location
  • Whether the role includes accounting, benefits or broader administrative responsibilities
  • Supervisory responsibilities as a worker gains experience

Education and software knowledge can also affect whether someone meets an employer's requirements.

According to Job Bank employment requirements for payroll administrators in BC, payroll administrators usually need secondary school plus college or other courses in accounting, bookkeeping or payroll administration, or previous payroll administration experience. Payroll association certification and payroll system or software experience may also be required.

That makes training relevant to employability, but students should be cautious of any claim that a particular payroll administrator course guarantees a certain wage.

What Is the Career Outlook for Payroll Administrators in BC?

For the longer-term outlook, WorkBC provides the most useful current forecast.

The B.C. Labour Market Outlook projects 2,600 payroll administrator job openings between 2025 and 2035. Of those, approximately 1,680 are expected in the Mainland-Southwest, which includes Metro Vancouver. WorkBC: Payroll administrators

These figures should not be interpreted as 2,600 entirely new payroll positions. The 2025 BC Labour Market Outlook breaks the forecast into approximately 760 openings from employment growth and 1,840 replacement openings, such as positions becoming available when workers leave the occupation. Payroll opportunities are also spread across industries. WorkBC forecasts payroll administrator openings between 2025 and 2035 in professional, scientific and technical services, health care and social assistance, public administration, construction and retail, among others.

For the shorter term, Job Bank currently gives payroll administrators a Moderate outlook in BC for 2025 to 2027. Since 2026 falls inside that forecast period, it remains relevant as a supporting indicator. The longer WorkBC forecast, however, provides a more useful picture for someone deciding whether to train for the occupation now.

How Is AI Affecting Payroll Work?

AI in payroll is increasingly relevant, but there is currently no reliable Canadian evidence showing that AI skills alone produce a higher payroll administrator salary.

What the data does show is that technology use is increasing in finance-related workplaces. Statistics Canada reported that 40.4% of finance and insurance businesses used AI to produce goods or deliver services in 2026, compared with 31.7% in 2025. Statistics Canada: AI use by Canadian businesses

The National Payroll Institute's Beyond Paydays: The Evolution of Payroll in Canada research also points to payroll becoming more technology-driven, with organizations looking at automation, analytics and AI while continuing to need payroll compliance, controls and professional oversight.

The implication for someone entering the field is not that payroll fundamentals are becoming less important. It is that the skill mix is expanding. Understanding payroll legislation, accounting and software remains essential, while familiarity with AI-assisted workflows, data analysis and verification can become increasingly useful.

For students comparing a payroll administrator course or payroll courses online, it is useful to look beyond the delivery format. Consider whether the curriculum covers:

  • Canadian payroll legislation and compliance
  • Payroll calculations and remittances
  • Accounting fundamentals
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Computerized accounting and payroll systems
  • Practical workplace experience
  • Newer digital and AI-assisted workflows

CDI College's AI-Driven Accounting and Payroll Administrator Diploma in BC is a 46-week program . The current program is online delivery; students should confirm current availability and delivery options directly with the campus.

The curriculum includes Accounting Fundamentals 1 and 2, Microsoft Excel, Sage 50, QuickBooks, Payroll Compliance Legislation, Payroll Fundamentals I and II, and a 100-hour practicum. Also, the program is eligible for the National Payroll Institute's Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) Designation

AI is incorporated into the financial training as well. For example, students use AI-assisted Excel tools, work with automated bank feeds and validate AI-categorized transactions in Sage 50. QuickBooks training incorporates bank rules and OCR, while Income Tax Fundamentals includes AI-assisted research with verification against official government sources.

This does not mean AI replaces payroll knowledge. The program combines AI-assisted workflows with accounting, payroll compliance and human verification.
