Network Administrator Certifications in Canada: What Beginners Should Know

October 21, 2026

The most useful certifications for a network administrator in Canada are CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Linux+ and a Microsoft Windows Server credential. No single certification is legally required, but they show employers what you can do before you have years of experience to prove it.

The challenge in 2026 is that almost every one of these exams has changed recently or is about to. This guide explains what each certification proves, what changed, and the order that makes sense for someone starting out.

Do Network Administrators Need Certifications in Canada?

Certifications are not mandatory, but many employers use them to screen applicants. Job Bank's requirements for network administrators (NOC 22220) say a college or other program in computer science, network administration or a related field is usually needed, and that "certification or training provided by software vendors may be required by some employers."

In practice, a diploma and certifications do different jobs:

  • A diploma gives you structured training, hands-on lab time and, in some programs, workplace experience.
  • A certification is an independent, industry-recognized check of specific skills, issued by the provider after you pass its exam.
  • Together, they help an entry-level applicant stand out when job postings ask for both training and proof of skills.

The Five Certifications Network Administrators Should Know

Each certification covers a different layer of the job. The table below shows the current exam versions according to each provider.

Certification Provider Current Exam What It Proves
CompTIA A+ CompTIA Core 1 and Core 2 (220-1201 and 220-1202) Hardware, operating systems, troubleshooting and help desk support
CompTIA Network+ CompTIA N10-009 Vendor-neutral networking, operations, security and troubleshooting
Cisco CCNA Cisco 200-301 CCNA v1.1 Configuring and managing Cisco routers, switches and IP services
CompTIA Linux+ CompTIA See CompTIA for the current version Linux system administration and command-line skills
Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Administrator Associate Microsoft AZ-802 Managing Windows Server in on-premises, cloud and hybrid environments

Vendor-Neutral vs Vendor-Specific

CompTIA certifications are vendor-neutral. They teach concepts that apply to any equipment, which makes them a strong starting point. Cisco and Microsoft certifications are vendor-specific. They prove you can work with the tools a particular employer actually runs.

This means the best mix for most entry-level administrators is a vendor-neutral foundation followed by one or two vendor-specific credentials that match the jobs you want.

What Changed in 2025 and 2026?

Three of the five certifications have changed since late 2024, the CCNA changes in February 2027, and older study material may still reference the retired versions.

Certification What Changed Date
CompTIA Network+ N10-009 fully replaced N10-008 English N10-008 retired December 2024
CompTIA A+ V15 (220-1201 and 220-1202) replaced V14 (220-1101 and 220-1102) V14 retired September 25, 2025
Microsoft Windows Server One exam, AZ-802, now leads to the Windows Server Administrator Associate Current on Microsoft Learn
Cisco CCNA CCNA v2.0 replaces 200-301 v1.1 v1.1 testing ends February 2, 2027; v2.0 starts February 3, 2027

What this means for you:

  • Check the exam code on any study material before you buy it. A Network+ book written for N10-008 no longer matches the exam.
  • Network+ N10-009 adds modern topics. CompTIA says the new version covers SD-WAN, infrastructure as code, zero-trust architecture and SASE, and network troubleshooting is now its largest domain at 24%.
  • Microsoft simplified its Windows Server path. The Windows Server Administrator Associate now uses a single exam, AZ-802: Administering Windows Server, instead of two.
  • Plan your CCNA timing. Cisco advises that candidates nearly ready for v1.1 should test before February 2, 2027. If you are just starting your studies, preparing for v2.0 may make more sense.

Which Order Should You Take Them In?

Most beginners do best by building from general IT support to networking, then adding vendor-specific skills. Each step builds on the last, so skipping ahead often means relearning the basics under exam pressure.

Step Certification Why at This Stage Typical Role It Supports
1 CompTIA A+ Builds the hardware, operating system and troubleshooting base Help desk or IT support technician
2 CompTIA Network+ Adds networking concepts that apply to any equipment Network support technician
3 Cisco CCNA Applies networking skills to Cisco devices Junior network administrator
4 Linux+ or Windows Server Administrator Associate Matches the server environment of the jobs you target Systems or network administrator

A few practical points help you plan:

  • Network+ assumes some experience. CompTIA recommends at least one year of IT experience, including 9 to 12 months of hands-on network support. A diploma with labs and a practicum can help you build that background.
  • The CCNA has no prerequisites. Cisco states the exam assumes little to no networking knowledge, but it is a 120-minute exam that rewards hands-on practice with routers and switches.
  • Pick your server certification by job postings. If local employers run Microsoft environments, the Windows Server path is the stronger choice. If they rely on Linux servers or cloud platforms, Linux+ fits better.

What Do Network Administrators Earn in Canada?

According to Job Bank wage data for NOC 22220, computer network and web technicians in Canada earn a median of $36.00 per hour, with wages ranging from $21.00 to $55.00 per hour.

Wages vary by province, employer, credential and experience. Certifications do not guarantee a higher wage, but they can help you qualify for roles that list them as a requirement, especially as you move from support work into administration.

How CDI College Training Helps Students Prepare

CDI College offers network administration training in four provinces, and each program is built differently. All four help students prepare for CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA and CompTIA Linux+ certification exams, and include Windows Server hybrid administration courses. The certifications are issued by the providers after students pass their exams.

Province Program Length Key Features
British Columbia Network Systems Administrator with AI 56 weeks Online delivery, generative AI used throughout the courses, 200-hour practicum; prepares for A+ 220-1201/1202 and Network+ N10-009
Alberta Network Systems Administrator 48 weeks In person, online or combined delivery, integration project with case studies
Manitoba Network Administrator 50 weeks Winnipeg campus, in class, online or blended delivery, workplace practicum
Ontario Network Systems Administrator 46 weeks In person, online or hybrid delivery

Build Your Certification Path With the Right Training

Network administration certifications are changing quickly, so the right plan matters as much as the right exam. A structured diploma can give you the skills, lab time and hands-on experience to approach each certification with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Do Network+ and CCNA Certifications Last?

Both are valid for three years. Cisco lets CCNA holders recertify by retaking the exam, earning 30 continuing education credits or advancing to a higher certification.

Is the CCNA Hard for Beginners?

The CCNA is challenging but designed to be achievable. Cisco says it assumes little to no networking knowledge, and studying Network+ topics and practising on real equipment first can make it more manageable.
