Becoming a Dental Assistant in Canada follows a clear, nationally recognized pathway. In most provinces, you can complete your training, pass the required exam, register with a regulatory body, and begin your career in under two years.

How Do I Become a Dental Assistant in Canada?  

Step 1. Complete a Dental Assisting Program  

The first step is earning a dental assisting diploma from a program that meets the education and certification requirements for the province where you intend to work. Your training will give you the intra-oral, clinical, technical, and administrative skills needed to thrive in modern dental practices. 

What you’ll learn:  

• Chairside assisting techniques (helping the dentist during procedures)    
• Oral sciences, dental materials, and pharmacology  
• Infection control and dental radiography (taking and processing X-rays)     
• Clinical dentistry and specialty procedures  
• Practice management, billing, scheduling, and dental software  

Programs also include hands-on training in on-campus dental facilities, followed by a mandatory clinical placement. During your placement, you’ll complete supervised hours in an external dental clinic and gain real-world experience working alongside practicing professionals.  

Why Program Approval, Accreditation, and NDAEB Eligibility Matter: 

CDI College’s Dental Assisting programs in British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba are listed by NDAEB as CDAC-accredited programs whose graduates are eligible to write the NDAEB exam. 

Graduates of CDAC-accredited programs are eligible to apply for registration with:  

• BC: BC College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP)  
• Alberta: College of Alberta Dental Assistants (CADA)  
• Manitoba: Manitoba Dental Association  

In Ontario, dental assisting is not independently regulated at the provincial level. However, dental assistants must hold the applicable NDAEB certificate to perform permitted Level II intra-oral duties. CDI College's Scarborough Dental Assisting program is ODAA-approved, with graduates eligible to write the NDAEB exam. Dental assistants who operate dental X-ray equipment must also meet Ontario’s separate requirements under the Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act, commonly known as HARP.  

Step 2. Pass the NDAEB Exam  

After completing your accredited program, the next milestone is the National Dental Assisting Examination Board (NDAEB) written exam.  

The NDAEB sets the national competency standard for dental assistants across Canada. Passing this exam is mandatory for:  

• Registration in British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba  
• Performing Level II intra-oral duties in Ontario  

Exam format: The NDAEB is a written, multiple-choice exam covering:  

• Clinical dental sciences  
• Infection control and sterilization  
• Patient management  
• Dental materials  
• Dental radiography

Step 3. Meet Your Province’s Registration or Practice Requirements  

Once you’ve passed the NDAEB, the final step before you can practice is registering with your province’s regulatory body, where required or meeting the practice requirements that apply in your province.  

Requirements vary by province, including professional titles, scope of duties, registration processes, and renewal processes. Here’s a quick overview:  

A closer look at each province:  

• British Columbia: You must be registered and licensed with BCCOHP before performing any intra-oral duties that fall within the Licensed Dental Assistant scope of practice. Licences must be renewed every year.  
• Alberta: After passing the NDAEB, register with CADA to become a Registered Dental Assistant. You may perform authorized duties in accordance with Alberta’s professional and supervision requirements.  
• Manitoba: A licence from the Manitoba Dental Association is mandatory to practise as a Registered Dental Assistant. The NDAEB exam is required before a permanent licence is issued, and the licence is renewed annually.  
• Ontario: While there is no independent provincial regulation, NDAEB certification is required for any dental assistant performing Level II intra-oral duties under the RCDSO’s guidelines.

Once you’ve completed your program, passed the NDAEB, and met your province’s registration requirements, you’re ready to launch your career.
